TRANCEL 6TP-348

This Trancel 6TP-348 was manufactured by Toshiba in Japan in 1959. It was offered in either an all black cabinet or white. The all black variant is sometimes referred to as the ‘Darth Vader’ model due to its sinister appearance! If I apply the same concept to this white variant then that would make it the ‘Storm Trooper’ model! (and another tacky nickname for a Toshiba is born!).

This Trancel 6TP-348 features a large reverse-painted face with attached gold chevron.

TRANSISTOR is written in the same unusual modernistic font as that exhibited on the Toshiba 8TP90 and 6TP-304, both of which are from the same time period. There is a small round Trancel cloisonné badge at the bottom of the metal speaker grill.

The plastic cabinet tapers slightly from top to bottom giving it an attractive appearance.

The volume knob with the concentric rings is the same as that used on the Toshiba 6TP-309. It has a silver kickstand on the back for lounging.

Toshiba produced two other variants of this radio; the TR-60 and the TR-80. Both were branded as Trancel. I believe both were released after the 6TP-348. They have slight cosmetic differences in cabinet design but look essentially the same with the addition of a 6 on the face of the TR-60 and an 8 on the face of the TR-80 (8 standing for eight transistors). The TR-60 pictured was manufactured in 1960.

This Trancel 6TP-348 was distributed in America by Transistor World Corp of 52 Broadway, New York. Trancel’s were also distributed by Excel Trading Group of New York. These companies may have been one in the same…
